If there’s any one diva that is the queen of shade and viral moments, it’s Mariah Carey.
If you scan the internet, you’ve no doubt run into a Mariah Carey meme or GIF. You’ve also probably seen perhaps Carey’s most viral moment of reaction when she responded to a question about Jennifer Lopez with, “I don’t know her.”
The legendary vocalist was in New York during Thanksgiving to promote her brand new Caution album and Pitchfork caught up with her and asked her finally about that infamous moment and whether or not she enjoys playing the “diva” role.
On playing a “character”
“I mean, look, it’s part of me. If you’re gonna get dressed up and do a show, why not just have fun and go there? We love a little zhuzh. I tried so hard for so long for people to know that I’m a real person and not this diva thing that they tried to create about me, or this unapproachable person from years gone by. But at the end of the day, nobody cares. They really don’t. They’re gonna have their perception of you.”
On seeing memes and getting meme’d for the most simple of sh*t
“[I see] some of them, yes. It is what it is. You have to embrace it. I really was trying to say something nice or say nothing at all. I really was.”
