Digging In The Crates: The Obscure Sample for GangStarr “Mass Appeal”

There are not many things that fascinate me more than a good sample. Lifting 3 or 5 seconds from one song and crafting a new song out if it is a dope skill set to me. Especially from a song or artist this is pretty obscure. That’s why the sample that DJ Premier utilized for Gang Starr on their song “Mass Appeal” is so genius to me.
Released on February 8, 1994 the premise of Mass Appeal was to “make fun of commercial radio” according to DJ Premier. The song is a sample of jazz guitarist Vic Juris “Horizon Drive” made in 1979. “Horizon Drive” is almost 7 minutes long but half way thorough at the 3:33 mark Preemo masterfully claims 3 seconds of it to to craft this hip hop classic. Genius.
